William Mitchell College of Law is an independent, nonprofit law school located in St. Paul, Minn. For more than 100 years, the law school has been committed to making legal education of the highest quality available to diverse, talented, and goal-oriented individuals. William Mitchell is known for its rigorous academic program, which combines legal theory with practical skills; its flexible schedule of day and night classes and part- and full-time enrollment options; and the accomplishments of its graduates. MISSION : We serve the law. We teach it, study it, practice it, and work to make it just. This is our mission. Our students come to William Mitchell with diverse traits, talents, and experiences, yet they have in common a desire to transform themselves into skilled and ethical legal professionals. They learn from us and from each other. We challenge and support them, and we are responsive to their family and career commitments. We study law and the legal profession as critical observers and active participants. Our legal education incorporates scholarship and practice, maintains a strong connection to the profession, is intellectually rigorous, and instills an ethic of service to clients and community. Our students graduate with the practical wisdom to put the law to work. VISION : To pioneer a demanding legal education so engaged with the profession that our graduates have an enduring advantage as they meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world. William Mitchell’s rigorous academic program stands out for its unique balance of legal theory and practical skills. You’ll learn the foundational aspects of law as well as the professional skills you’ll need to practice it. Our flexible schedule enables you to balance your education with law-related externships, work, and family life. You’ll choose from one of the largest and most in-depth course offerings in the country and learn from faculty, who are not only experts in their specializations, but have practiced the law they teach. William Mitchell belongs to the Consortium for Innovative Legal Education, or CILE, in a partnership with California Western School of Law in San Diego, New England School of Law in Boston, and South Texas College of Law in Houston. It is the only program of its kind in the United States and allows you to partake in classes at any of the other three CILE law schools, many via video conferencing, as well as programs and study abroad options offered through the CILE schools. Students who participate in William Mitchell’s moot courts and competitions find additional opportunities to practice the skills they've learned and gain an understanding of how attorneys function within a particular area of law. William Mitchell participates in various competitions, each featuring a distinct skill important to practicing lawyers. Each competition has its own focus, format, and eligibility standards. William Mitchell has one of the broadest arrays of course offerings in the country, with more than 100 courses to choose from. You’ll take foundation courses, like Civil Procedure, and skills courses, like Writing and Representation, and you’ll also have your choice of a wide range of specialized, small-enrollment courses. You can take courses in focus areas such as intellectual property, business, taxation, family law, international and comparative law, and criminal law, just to name a few. Combining your efforts to get a juris doctor and a master's degree at the same time enables you to study two related fields, integrate coursework, and expand your career opportunities. Through this program, getting a graduate degree is more accessible since it allows you to earn two graduate degrees in less time and for less cost than if you pursued them separately. Because each school will accept up to nine elective credits from the other institution, for a total of 18 credits, students attending both programs full time can graduate with both degrees in about four years instead of the average five years it would take to pursue each degree separately. William Mitchell’s faculty members are not only experts in the law and subjects they teach, but they are committed to preparing students to enter the legal world. They are prolific scholars who write articles and books for academic, practitioner, and student audiences. Our faculty have practiced law in a variety of settings, including major law firms, companies, and government departments, and continue to volunteer their services developing model state statutes and representing clients pro bono. Since William Mitchell College of Law was founded more than a century ago, flexibility has been a cornerstone of its approach to legal education. Students can choose to attend William Mitchell full or part time and have a rich curriculum from which to choose their courses. Full-time and adjunct faculty members teach both full-time and part-time students. That means, whether you attend law school part time or full time, you will receive the same high-quality legal education. At William Mitchell, students have multiple scheduling options for required and core courses, which are offered morning, late afternoon, and evening. Upper-level electives are primarily offered in the evening to take advantage of the rich professional experience of our adjunct faculty. Flexible scheduling enables you to enhance your education through the pursuit of real-world legal experience. William Mitchell offers a wide variety of services and extracurricular activities, making your student life outside the classroom as significant as it is inside. From political groups to specialty areas to the student-edited newspaper, you can participate in more than 25 student organizations. William Mitchell provides a number of services especially for students, such as the Multicultural Affairs and Career Development offices. And the Twin Cities is an ideal setting to make professional connections and experience a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities.
