Hamline University (School of Law)

Hamline University School of Law educates students to apply legal knowledge with disciplined imagination, a global perspective, and creative conflict resolution skills. Our challenging yet humane environment inspires men and women to improve lives and enhance communities. We strive to strengthen society through professional excellence and ethical leadership. For almost 30 years, Hamline University School of Law has offered legal education that emphasizes functional skills blended with theoretical knowledge, an ethic of community service, and a commitment to social justice. Students find a contemporary, high-quality academic program that provides the opportunity to experience the practice of law while learning. Hamline Law School is an international community of leaders, lawyers, and learners. Located in the vibrant urban centers of Minneapolis/St. Paul, the law school sits among 55 acres of wooded campus, creating the ideal environment for mixing culture, ideas, perspectives and people. The result is a passionate, highly engaged community, which works collaboratively on education, scholarship and public policy - the ideal environment to become a lawyer. Becoming a lawyer means far more than practicing law. Teachers, business professionals, filmmakers and presidents have all been lawyers. Hamline's learning community prepares our students to have an impact as trial attorneys, educators, business leaders, legislators, or scores of other professions. The discipline, problem-solving, values, and strategic thinking you will learn make the Hamline Law School experience and J.D. degree valuable cornerstones on which to build a future. Law school is challenging and Hamline accepts only highly qualified candidates, but for students with the skills and commitment, the rewards last a lifetime. The Hamline University School of Law academic program provides a rich opportunity to individualize a student’s study in the areas of law that matter most to each student. The program is internationally known for the Dispute Resolution Institute, ranked fourth in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, the growing Health Law Center, and concentrations in Intellectual Property, Business Representation, Children and the Law, International Law and many others. Hands-on experience is available in a wide variety of subjects through nine clinical programs and a practicum/externship program featuring seven practice areas. Clinics such as the Innocence Clinic, Small Business/Non-Profit Clinic, and the Child Advocacy Clinic offer sophisticated practice experience, often in areas that are not duplicated elsewhere. Through the practicum program, students receive one-on-one supervision while working in law offices, government agencies, or judicial chambers. These opportunities often define the careers of young lawyers and provide an important advantage in becoming an attorney. The Hamline University School of Law student body comprises a diversity of students, from those just out of college to those returning to develop a second-career, as well as a community from a wealth of ethnic and religious backgrounds. This variety opens a breadth of perspectives and experiences for all to draw on, and gives depth and richness to learning. We attract students owning strong academic abilities, who graduate with exemplary writing skills, excellent functional expertise, and theoretical imagination. Graduates of Hamline University School of Law begin their careers as functional lawyers, as evidenced by our 91% placement rate. At Hamline University School of Law, students learn about the law, but more than that, they learn to practice it. In addition to our nine clinics and seven practicum placements that give students the opportunity to practice law with real clients and pending cases, Hamline has fifteen national, international or online Moot Court competition opportunities. Hamline University School of Law offers both a full-time program and part-time week-end program to accommodate employment, family, and financial needs. Our faculty represents the best in legal education, including both founding members of the law school and scholars new to teaching. Recent hiring in areas such as Intellectual Property, International Business, Legal History, and Health Law complement internationally recognized faculty expertise in Commercial Law, Entertainment Law, Constitutional Law, and Native American Law. Most important to us, our professors know their students' names and foster a sense of community. In addition to our full time faculty, adjunct professors, clinic supervisors, and legal writing instructors, we boast an active group of alumni who mentor and coach students. Hamline University School of Law, positioned in the heart of the Twin Cities, adjoins an eclectic neighborhood with numerous shops and restaurants with diverse ethnic cuisines. Our lushly landscaped grounds offer a meditation garden and walking paths. The law school provides on-campus graduate housing with a choice of apartment or dormitory living. Law students enjoy all the advantages of a small university including a fitness center, cultural, social and athletic events, and four dining options on campus.
