Personalization: Chapman operates on the philosophy that a legal mind develops most effectively in a collaborative environment. Professors view themselves as teachers and mentors and are available to students for intellectual partnerships as well as academic and career advice.

Innovation: At Chapman, the Socratic method is only one of our teaching tools. Professors also employ other pedagogical styles including lectures, small seminars, student study groups and simulation courses. Chapman also stresses ethics and citizenship in its legal training; we see ourselves as a community dedicated to fostering the intellectual and personal development of good people who also happen to be great lawyers.

The Chapman University School of Law offers a full-time program leading to the Juris Doctor degree. In addition, the School of Law offers a joint JD/MBA degree with Chapman’s AACSB-accredited Argyros School of Business and Economics.

The academic program requires three years of full-time study. In keeping with ABA guidelines, full-time students must limit any outside employment to less than 20 hours per week.

The required curriculum offers a core foundation in legal studies and covers foundational topics such as torts, contracts, criminal law, real property, civil procedure, legal research and writing. The required curriculum also grounds students in corporations and federal income taxation, constitutional law, evidence and professional responsibility.

You also will be required to take part in the lawyering skills curriculum. Skills training is the practical, experiential component of your education, where you begin to acquire the skills essential to the practice of law. In these courses you will have the chance to gain competency in negotiations, client interviewing and counseling, mediation, advanced legal research, advocacy, appellate practices and procedures, legal drafting, and trial practice.

The advanced curriculum will provide you the opportunity to take electives that help integrate your legal knowledge and lawyering skills to solve client problems. Through Chapman’s academic externship program, you can augment your classroom experience in real-world legal settings, giving you experience you can take with you into the job market. Furthermore, the clinics in tax, bankruptcy, elder law and appellate practice will offer you the chance to represent actual clients, long before you have passed a bar examination or been licensed to practice.

he Law School has seen an explosion of new clinical offerings in the last year.

Students interested in appellate work participate in the Ninth Circuit Appellate Clinic. Students learn the fine art of appealing decisions of lower courts by writing briefs and presenting oral arguments before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In addition, the Claremont Institute Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, under the direction of Professor John Eastman, provides students with an opportunity to earn independent study credit assisting Professor Eastman with the Center's ongoing trial and appellate litigation. Over the past four years, numerous students have participated in the program, conducting research, drafting discovery requests, preparing draft summary judgment motions and appellate briefs, attending hearings, and even preparing briefs for filing with the Supreme Court of the United States in such landmark cases as Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (the Ohio school vouchers case) and Grutter v. Bollinger (the Michigan affirmative action cases).

For the third time in three years, the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic at Chapman University School of Law was awarded a federal grant to operate and maintain a clinic to represent taxpayers before the IRS and in U.S. Tax Court. Chapman has received the highest grant award of $100,000 every year since the inception of the program, and is one of only two law schools in California to receive the maximum federal grant. Law students who have completed prerequisite tax law courses are eligible to represent actual taxpayers under the supervision of attorney-professors. If matters cannot be resolved before trial, students may represent clients before a judge in U.S. Tax Court. The clinic not only provides a valuable service to disadvantaged taxpayers, it teaches students valuable negotiation and interviewing skills and helps the IRS in more efficient resolution of tax controversies.
