University of Missouri - Columbia (School of Law)
At the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, learning doesn’t stop when students leave the classroom. There are many opportunities for students to apply the legal theory they are learning in the classroom to real world situations through the school’s externship, judicial clerkship and clinic programs. In addition, the School has several student-run academic organizations in which students apply their knowledge and gain valuable legal experience that will better prepare them for the workplace.
The School of Law is a charter member of the
Association of American Law Schools and is fully accredited by the American Bar Association.
Students often describe the academic atmosphere at MU as challenging, but with an emphasis on learning rather than competition. Courses offer students a broad and balanced perspective on the
law and legal institutions to prepare them for a wide range of career options in law, as well as alternative careers anywhere in the country.
The first year class is divided into two sections with approximately 75 students in each section. Many of the upper level classes have an average of fewer than 20 students. The average age of
students is 24, with ages ranging from in the 20’s to the 50’s. The male/female ratio has recently been about 60 percent to 40 percent, and
minorities usually have constituted 10-15 percent of each class.
In a recent national student survey, MU Law ranked in the top 20 schools in the nation in student satisfaction.

The school’s spacious and modern building is a magnificent laboratory for learning the law, and often is a significant factor in a student’s decision to come to MU. Hulston Hall’s award-winning design makes it one of the most attractive buildings on campus and is a place most law students are proud to call “home.”
Dominated by open space, skylights and windows,
the building feels light and airy – a good antidote to the inevitable stress of the law school experience. MU students rate the law school facility as one of the top in the country.
The self-contained facility houses the law school’s
classrooms, libraries, student offices, computer labs, lounges and dining areas. Student offices and study carrels line the facility’s sun-drenched outer library walls.
Hulston Hall is truly a facility in which the flow of
life from class to study to leisure can be accomplished with the greatest of ease.
Students at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law receive state-of-the-art training on the use of electronic resources. Multiple computer terminals for the LEXIS/ NEXIS® and WESTLAW® computerized legal research systems are available throughout the law building and also are accessible from home. In addition, the computer lab in the Law Library offers terminals for
students’ use, with free access to the Internet, e-mail, word processing, computer-assisted legal instruction and a variety of databases.
The Law School’s wireless network provides laptop owners mobile access to the Internet and computer-assisted legal services.
Presentation software, Smart Boards and other educational technologies available in most classrooms and in the library support course instruction and collaborative work.
Several faculty members make their class materials available to students online through course software systems with integrated access to online legal research services.
Many professors also use personal websites to extend resources beyond the classroom. Students are trained in the use of exam software for classes in which the faculty member offers this option.
