Boston University (School of Law)

BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW is a community of top legal scholars, teachers, students and alumni, dedicated to providing the finest legal education in the nation, in a rigorous but supportive environment. Since our doors opened in 1872, we have welcomed qualified men and women, without regard to background or belief. And our founding principle, that legal education should emphasize not just theory and analysis but practical applications, still governs our curriculum today. We encourage you to explore our community through this Web site, and to contact us for more information.

Boston University School of Law gives students one of the finest legal education in the nation and, indeed, the world. Our guiding principle is that teaching comes first. The nationally recognized scholars that comprise our faculty are, first and foremost, dedicated teachers devoted to helping students learn the law as active and engaged participants. This commitment to excellence in the classroom sets our School apart. And that commitment shows in the awards the faculty consistently wins for teaching, and in the success of graduates.

Our curriculum has been designed to combine the best of traditional legal education with a forward looking perspective. We offer one of the widest selections of courses and seminars available anywhere. And we provide students the opportunity to concentrate in any of five areas that are being shaped by technological change. Across the curriculum, courses address the effects of the Internet, the globalization of trade and finance, and the promise of medical and biological technology. We offer nine dual-degree programs in conjunction with other Boston University graduate schools and eight study abroad programs in South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Extensive clinical and advanced litigation programs give students opportunities to develop practical courtroom skills and to represent real clients. And our LL.M. programs provide expert instruction to foreign lawyers and U.S. law school graduates in highly-regarded courses of study.

While our instruction is forward-looking, in one important way our past is our future. Since our opening in 1872, we have accepted all students of interest and ability—of all backgrounds and beliefs—without exception. This tradition is one that few schools can match. We are a community that values and promotes collegiality, openness, and mutual respect among all its members. These values include strong support for our students—in law school and beyond—because we understand that it is only through the successes of our students as individuals that we succeed as an institution.

When our students graduate, they can look forward to a rewarding legal career. Our alumni/ae sit in Congress, work in the White House, produce some of the nation’s best entertainment, and run some of the largest corporations in the world. They serve the public at all levels of the judiciary, as prosecutors and defenders, and in legal service agencies. They practice in the nation’s top law firms, in small partnerships, and as solo practitioners.

Though their careers may take them far, many of our graduates keep coming back as volunteers and supporters because they believe in the School, its people, and its values. We are proud of them, and they reciprocate.

Students in BU Law clinical programs apply legal theories learned in the classroom to real-life lawyering, representing actual clients in real cases from initial interview to final courtroom summation. You'll get practical experience safe in the knowledge that an accomplished clinical faculty member is overseeing your work. You may choose from clinical programs in criminal law, civil litigation and legislative services, as well as legal externships and judicial internships.
