Northern Kentucky University (Salmon P. Chase College of Law)

The Chase College of Law offers extensive opportunities to gain valuable practical experience beyond the classroom through our exceptional Clinical Externship Program, providing legal placements for academic credit. Recent externship placements have included federal and state courts; the federal and state public defender’s offices; federal, state, and county prosecutor offices; the U.S. Department of Labor; the National Labor Relations Board; the Internal Revenue Service; the Kentucky Legislature, the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy’s Innocence Project; city, county, and regional legal aid offices; several county and commonwealth attorney’s offices; and the Children’s Law Center. This range of legal externship opportunities is among the finest at law schools across the nation.

Complementing our Clinical Externship Program, and providing enormous opportunity for students and the law school, is our Local Government Law Center. Our Center, one of only a handful in the country, provides students an internship opportunity in a setting that addresses the full range of legal issues confronted by city and county governments. Experience in this arena, dealing with a wide range of community concerns, not only offers students an opportunity to explore one of the most far-reaching areas of law, but also helps prepare law students for their future roles as community leaders.

The Employment and Labor Law Concentration provides Chase students the opportunity to focus their legal studies in this growing area of the law, and a way to signal this interest to prospective employers, while simultaneously permitting students to enroll in a well-rounded curriculum. Most students can complete the Concentration without adding to the minimum credits required for graduation. Many students who have written papers in Concentration classes have subsequently published those papers as scholarly articles.

Opportunities also abound to develop important advocacy skills and to test those skills in head-to-head competition with law students around the country. Our Mock Trial Competition Teams and Moot Court Teams have recently won a plethora of national and regional awards. As an added benefit flowing from the success of our competition teams, area law firms, alumni, and friends have sponsored our National Trial Advocacy Competition Team, established scholarships to recognize our best advocates, and participated as team coaches.

Chase College of Law is home to many vibrant student organizations. Through involvement in these extracurricular activities, students create community, enhance classroom learning experiences, exercise leadership skills, and pursue special interests. Our student organizations sponsor many exciting professional programs, social events, and community service projects.

The strength of our education program is bolstered by the added flexibility of our full-time and part-time programs. The flexibility offered by these programs helps individual students who may have additional responsibilities that otherwise would not permit them to complete law school on a full-time basis. In addition, the part-time program draws students from a wide range of other career fields whose experiences not only add context to their own legal studies, but whose life and work experiences enrich the classroom and educational experience for all students.

The value of the superb and flexible educational experience available at the Chase College of Law is strengthened further by the extensive alumni network of highly successful Chase graduates found in 47 states, Washington, D.C., and several foreign countries. These graduates are business leaders, government leaders, federal and state judges and legislators, partners of large and small law firms, and leaders in public service. This network is actively engaged in our educational programs and in supporting the Chase College of Law, our students, and our graduates.

The Chase College of Law Career Development Office assists students in their career planning and in their development of employment-seeking skills. The Career Development Office offers a series of seminars and simulated interviews during the academic year to prepare students for entry into the job market. The office has also developed a strong program of on-campus interviews with employers.

The Career Development Office provides timely information to students and alumni about current employment openings. Our career development library collection includes legal directories, reference books, and popular resource materials on career options such as private practice, business, government, judicial clerkships, public interest and nontraditional law careers, as well as specialized areas of law practice.

Many students are employed in law clerk and other legal positions while enrolled in the Chase College of Law.

The Chase College of Law joins other law schools in the region to participate in workshops and job fairs, including the Tri-State Diversity Recruiting Program hosted by Greenebaum, Doll & McDonald, and the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati/ Cincinnati Bar Association Roundtable First-Year Minority Clerkship Program.
