Wayne State University

Wayne State University Law School is the only public law school in the nation’s eighth largest metropolitan area and one of just two public law schools in the state of Michigan. Located on a beautiful 203-acre campus in the heart of Michigan’s legal, economic, and cultural capital, the Law School blends cutting-edge legal theory with real-world practice skills. Its graduates serve at the highest levels of law and government. Its faculty are dedicated teachers and distinguished scholars known nationally and internationally for their contributions to legal study. Its students display a diversity of backgrounds and interests. And its location—minutes away from courts, major law firms, government agencies, corporate headquarters, and the nation’s busiest international border—offers unrivaled opportunities in employment, hands-on experience, and public service.

In 2004, the Law School attained another milestone by appointing Frank H. Wu as its ninth dean. Dean Wu is the only Asian-American law dean in Michigan and one of the few in the nation, and he brings with him a wealth of experience in public intellectual life and a dynamic approach to enhancing the quality and reputation of the Law School's programs. A native of metropolitan Detroit, Dean Wu earned his law degree from the University of Michigan and taught at Howard University in Washington, D.C. before coming to Wayne. He is highly sought-after as a speaker on issues of race in American life and is known for his 2002 book Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White. In June 2004, soon after being named Dean, Wu was honored as one of the nation's twenty most influential scholars by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine.

Dean Wu takes office at a time of unprecedented opportunity for the Law School. The University has committed substantial resources toward the growth of the Law School's faculty and programs in the near term, and the Law School's active and supportive alumni have committed to raise considerable scholarship funds to ensure that the Law School continues to attract, retain, and graduate the best and the brightest future lawyers for years to come.

Wayne State University is located in the heart of the University/Cultural Center area about four miles from downtown Detroit. Its campus features pedestrian malls, green spaces, mature trees, and many architecturally significant buildings. Within walking distance of campus are the Detroit Public Library, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the International Institute, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Detroit Science Center, and the Museum of African-American History. South of the main campus are the Detroit Medical Center and the Wayne State University Medical School, as well as the University's Hilberry Theatre, which houses one of the most distinguished graduate theater repertory companies in the United States.

Many Wayne Law students find internships, summer jobs, and permanent employment in the nearby downtown area, which is home to state and federal courts, governmental agencies, major law firms, public interest organizations, as well as corporate headquarters. Downtown also boasts the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Michigan Opera Theater, the famous Fox and State Theaters, and other cultural venues; the homes of the Tigers, the Lions, and the Red Wings; and a large and growing variety of restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries. Every year, downtown Detroit hosts one of the nation's largest outdoor jazz festivals and an internationally popular electronic music festival.

The Detroit metropolitan area is the eighth largest in the nation and the home of the country's busiest international border crossing, shared with the city of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Metro Detroit residents live in a wide array of urban and suburban neighborhoods, enjoy proximity to a modern international airport and major airline hub, and take advantage of the natural beauty and year-round outdoor activities that the Great Lakes State has to offer. Spurred by the automotive industry and the many area institutions of higher education, the region is developing a vigorous high-tech economy.
