John Marshall Law School
Located in one of America's most vibrant cities, John Marshall Law School is dedicated to providing a high quality legal education consistent with its original mission of providing nontraditional students access to a legal education. Consequently, the student population is not just ethnically diverse but diverse in life experiences and professional background. While this diversity enriches the academic environment, it challenges the institution to meet the educational needs of its students, many of whom are either returning to the rigors of an academic experience, or are simply seeking a supportive environment for the study of law.
John Marshall Law School meets this challenge by motivating students to develop intellectually and encouraging them to develop the practical skills necessary for the profession. At the same time, the School provides options that allow students to control the pace of learning. All of this takes place within an environment supportive of the dream of joining the noble profession of law.
The mission of John Marshall Law School is to prepare highly competent and professional lawyers who possess a strong social conscience, continually demonstrate high ethical standards, and are committed to the improvement of the legal system and society.
Within a diverse environment, the Law School seeks to achieve its mission by pursuing the following goals:
1. Offer an intellectually rigorous academic program, including opportunities for professional
2. Provide access to a high-quality program of legal education for all qualified applicants
by maintaining a flexible program of full-time and part-time law study.
3. Instill in students the highest sense of the professionalism and ethical and moral
responsibilities required of members of the legal profession.
4. Prepare students to anticipate and adapt to future developments in the law.
5. Promote the continuous development of a law faculty dedicated to achieving the highest standards of classroom teaching, scholarship that informs their teaching, and service to the legal community.
6. Offer academic support programs to students from diverse educational backgrounds.
7. Encourage students to engage in pro bono activities and to provide legal services to
historically underserved communities upon their admission to the Bar.
8. Engage in ongoing self-assessment to ensure that the institution is meeting its stated goals.
John Marshall Law School - Atlanta received its provisional approval and was added to the list of schools approved by the American Bar Association in early 2005. Provisional approval is the first stage in the approval process of the ABA and is the stage through which all approved schools must first proceed prior to achieving full approval. It is the published policy of the ABA that students enrolled in a provisionally approved school are entitled to all the rights and privileges to which students at fully approved schools are entitled. John Marshall Law School - Atlanta intends to apply for full approval at the earliest possible time.
The John Marshall Law School campus is centrally located in the social, cultural, and economic hub of the South. In close proximity to many of Atlanta’s thousands of law firms, as well as government offices, state and federal courts, and legal non-profit organizations, the Law School is ideally situated in the city’s thriving legal community. Atlanta also boasts an extensive array of arts, theatre, music, sports and recreational events, making it an exciting place to live.
The school is housed in a modern eight story mid-rise located on one of the major streets in Atlanta. The facilities of the school have recently undergone a major renovation with the construction of new classrooms and a new trial and appellate courtroom, all of which are equipped with the latest in audio-visual technology, as well as a substantial expansion in space allocated to the law library. All are located in one building to provide convenient access to students. The building is fully accessible to those with special needs.
The education you receive in law school is the foundation of your legal career. The faculty of John Marshall Law School have created a program of study designed to foster success in law school and in practice. Our focus is the student – ensuring that students have the opportunity both inside and outside the classroom to master the law and the skills necessary to put the law to effective use.
The Law School’s required curriculum exposes students to foundational courses and to those areas of the law most commonly encountered by practitioners. In addition, the curriculum includes an innovative four semester legal writing program which provides students the opportunity to practice skills in legal analysis, legal writing, oral advocacy, pre-trial practice, and contract drafting. The Law School’s elective course offerings provide students the opportunity to study cutting edge areas of the law, including intellectual property, financial fraud, and health care law, and the opportunity to practice legal skills in courses such as trial advocacy, negotiations, and alternative dispute resolution. Students are able to combine the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom through participation in co-curricular activities, such as moot court competition and trial team, and through the Externship Program and volunteer opportunities.
As a student at John Marshall Law School, you will be provided with the opportunities and experiences necessary to build the foundation of your future success in the practice of law.
