Western State University (College of Law)

Western State University College of Law was founded in 1966 and is the oldest law school in Orange County. Located in the heart of Southern California, Western State is dedicated to providing students with the support, guidance, and training necessary to realize their potential. Western State offers both full- and part-time programs and throughout its 35 year history has been committed to the excellence of its part-time program. The law school's part-time program has made it possible for many students to go to law school, graduate, and contribute as lawyers to their community.

Western State's student body is diverse and reflects the law school's mission to serve the community. That diversity is also reflected in the dedicated and highly motivated faculty who serve as scholars and mentors both inside and outside of the classroom.

Western State University College of Law has earned a solid reputation for producing more than 9,000 accomplished graduates who continue to garner accolades from the communities in which they serve as respected judges, teachers, politicians, government administrators, and practicing legal professionals.

This educational foundation and practical lawyering experience will assist you in the transition and throughout your professional career.

Your partnership with Western State University extends beyond graduation day.

Our Career Services Offýce will assist you with your job search after graduation. The network of Western State alumni and our roots in the legal community will help you prepare for success in your legal career.

Law schools across the country offer quite similar programs of instruction. Typically, all of the first year and much of the second year program consist of required courses such as Criminal Law, Contracts, Torts, Property Law and Civil Procedure.

What differentiates Western State is the methods its faculty use in teaching. These methods include much small group instruction, individualized support, and the application of new techniques now made possible through technology. The school offers a legal education aimed at both teaching law and practice skills as well as helping the student become a better professional. Traditional classroom studies are combined with computerized technology and Internet-based educational forums to help students learn more efficiently and effectively.

The Western State University Legal Clinic offers students the opportunity to practice law while still in school. Each semester, up to 10 student attorneys who are certified by the State Bar of California, provide legal assistance to members of the Orange County community under supervision of Professor Terence Roberts, the Clinic Director. In this program, students will represent clients with problems in domestic relations and consumer complaints. Students have the opportunity to enhance their classroom learning and to acquire practical skills of interviewing and counseling clients, preparing pleadings, writing motions, negotiation, and mediating. Students also engage in all phases of the litigation process including representing their clients in courtrooms throughout Orange County.

The faculty and staff at Western State University College of Law are a diverse group of highly motivated, talented, and service oriented individuals. Many of the faculty have graduate degrees in addition to their Juris Doctor degree and are dedicated to the success of students in their chosen profession. Western State's adjunct faculty play an important role as well; sitting judges and practicing attorneys enrich the educational process through their wealth of practical experience, insight, and wisdom.

Western State University College of Law’s new library, which was dedicated in 1998, has been designed with the single focus of serving the student body. It offers convenient access and current electronic resources for researching class materials, as well as a friendly, expert library staff to assist you. The physical design of the seating, lighting, private study rooms, open naturally-lit areas, 227 user friendly computer network connections, and every other aspect of the library make it a comfortable, efficient, and effective resource for students.
