DePaul University (College of Law)

Located in the heart of Chicago, DePaul University College of Law is a world-class educational institution befitting a world-class city. From the historic "L" trains that circle the Loop to a revitalized State Street and newly opened Millennium Park, a thriving metropolis filled with history, culture and diversity rests right outside DePaul's doors.

Chicago is DePaul's campus, and students take full advantage of its many sights, sounds and opportunities. Nearly three million people in 200 neighborhoods enjoy 30 miles of picturesque lakefront, 15 miles of beaches, 50 museums, seven major sports teams and more than 7,000 restaurants. Chicago is unrivaled when it comes to culture, from an innovative blend of classic and modern architecture to critically lauded music and theater offerings to hometown favorites such as deep dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs and Eli's cheesecake.

Although Chicago offers much in the way of lifestyle and recreation, the city also distinguishes itself as a global business and communication hub. Students at the College of Law study in the heart of the city's legal and financial district, and this thriving urban environment offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in real-world experiences and gain a competitive edge in the job market.

For DePaul students, Chicago is a warm and inviting home, and the opportunities provided for scholarship and personal growth are limitless. That's why DePaul students are consistently voted the happiest in the nation.

To succeed in the practice of law, attorneys must possess more than just knowledge of legal doctrine and theory. They also must master the skills crucial to the profession. DePaul recognizes this need and devotes substantial resources to its professional skills program. Through our extensive skills curriculum, legal clinics, Field Placement Program and moot court teams, DePaul students develop the skills and confidence that are critical to their success in the legal profession. Our institutes and centers provide additional opportunities for students to work on timely legal issues and acquire skills that are transferable to other areas of practice.

DePaul's dedicated faculty, many of whom are nationally recognized leaders in scholarly legal research, take great pride in their ability to challenge and enlighten students in a collaborative learning process. Our faculty is extremely accessible, approachable and deeply committed to their students. DePaul students have numerous opportunities to work on cutting-edge legal issues with faculty members as well as practicing lawyers. These opportunities replicate the complexity of practicing law and prepare our students for positions of leadership in the field. At DePaul, quality teaching is expected, and excellence is highly valued.

Due to our location in the heart of downtown Chicago, we have earned the reputation as "Chicago's Law School." With more than 8,500 law graduates practicing in the Chicago metropolitan area, our impressive reputation within the legal community is an asset to our students and is further strengthened by our remarkable alumni network, which connects students to graduates. Many of our alumni are leaders in their fields, including the current mayor of Chicago, more than 250 judges, several of the nation's top trial lawyers and more than 100 high-ranking executives in corporations around the world. With such a large number of alumni in close proximity and enthusiastic to share their knowledge, our students have abundant opportunities to work in federal and state courts, government agencies, major law firms and corporations, as well as public interest organizations. Through the remarkable success and accomplishments of our alumni, DePaul's reputation continues to grow.

Because of the broad diversity of backgrounds and experiences of our law school constituents, there is a connectedness within the institution that creates a genuine sense of community. That community comprises a dedicated faculty, a talented staff, an extensive network of proud and loyal alumni, and remarkable students who come from all over the country representing a wide range of cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Interaction with faculty, staff and alumni is encouraged and facilitated both inside and outside of the classroom. Camaraderie is essential, and, although the study of law is taken very seriously by our students, we also encourage them to enjoy their experiences outside of the classroom. Equipped with an excellent academic foundation, professional skills training and a first-rate law school experience, graduates of the College of Law leave well-prepared for the challenges of the profession.

DePaul University College of Law is committed to diversity. DePaul provides access for all to higher education, regardless of class, race, ethnicity or economic barriers. The DePaul community is a welcoming one, marked by its inclusive environment, diversity and openness to a wide range of students, faculty and staff. As p a rt of its basic core values, DePaul believes that a diverse workforce and educational environment are directly related to the success of the institution and are essential in preparing students to participate effectively in today's workplace.

DePaul is one of a handful of law schools in the nation that has made it a priority to ensure that all of its students receive the support needed to succeed in law school and graduate fully prepared to enter the legal profession. To achieve this institutional commitment, the College of Law founded its Academic Support Program more than a decade ago to help first-year law students, particularly those with nontraditional backgrounds, develop critical thinking and analytical skills that law school demands. Two full-time legal education specialists oversee the program and address the wider concerns of enhancing the learning opportunities for all students. The program, which includes weekly classes, monthly workshops, small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring, allows students to actively engage in legal pedagogy.
