University of Detroit Mercy (School of Law)

University of Detroit Mercy (School of Law) Founded in 1912, UDM is a well-established Catholic law school sponsored by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. The school is approved by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools.

UDM is located in the heart of downtown Detroit, across from the General Motors World Headquarters in the Renaissance Center. The School is within walking distance of federal and state courts, law firms, and the city's municipal centers.

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is committed to the principles of equal educational opportunity.

This year we are introducing a series of new courses, including Canon Law and Talmudic Law. Our course on Canon Law is being co-taught with Sacred Heart Major Seminary this fall and includes both seminarians and law students in the classroom. This is a fascinating course and fits in well with our special focus on ethics. Too many law school students get the impression that the rules of professional conduct are what determine ethical practice. While the rules may be the floor, they are certainly not the ceiling. Canon Law and Talmudic Law can help students explore different legal and ethical systems and modes of analysis.

In 2000, the School of Law established the Immigration Law Clinic to serve indigent foreign nationals seeking asylum in he U.S. Under faculty supervision, students act as lead counsel in preparing clients' applications for asylum and advocating on their behalf before the U.S. Immigration Court in Detroit.

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Major Seminary, the Law School offers students an elective course in Canon Law, in which both law students and seminarians learn these legal issues together in class.
Job placement rates for UDM's School of Law graduates rank among the best in the country. More than 90 percent of graduates from 2003 reported they were employed or pursuing another degree within nine months of graduation.

Since 1965 the Urban Law Clinic has provided "hands-on" experience for students in various capacities in legal representation of clients in "real-life" settings, including more recent components such as the Mobile Law Office, which provides legal services to the underserved, and the Mediation Clinic and Appellate Advocacy Clinic.
The School of Law's joint degree program with the University of Windsor School of Law provides students with both an American and a Canadian law degree within three years.

The Applied Legal Theory and Analysis (ALTA) program for all first-year law students is a national model in the area of legal writing and analysis instruction.
