The John Marshall Law School

The John Marshall Law School Throughout its history, The John Marshall Law School has upheld a tradition of diversity, innovation and opportunity, and has consistently provided an education that combines an understanding of the theory, the philosophy and the practice of law. Founded in 1899, The John Marshall Law School today is proud to be recognized as a dynamic independent law school, promoting excellence in all aspects of legal education.

The John Marshall Law School provides one of the most comprehensive and aggressive professional skills training curricula in the country, including trial and appellate advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, client counseling, negotiations and legal drafting.

Students and faculty also benefit from state-of-the-art computer technology in the library, in our modern computer classroom, and through wireless Internet connection.

Our seven Centers for Excellence serve as an academic foundation for our students' successes. Their specialized curricula are among the most comprehensive in the country. In addition to our six LL.M. programs-employee benefits, information technology law, intellectual property law, international business and trade law, real estate law and tax law - John Marshall offers its students a joint J.D./LL.M., J.D./M.B.A. (in conjuction with Dominican University), J.D./M.P.A. and J.D. M.A (in conjunction with Roosevelt University). Foreign students may elect to earn an LL.M. in Comparative Legal Studies.

For more than 100 years, The John Marshall Law School has been a pioneer in legal education.

Guided by a tradition of diversity, innovation, access and opportunity, John Marshall was among the first law schools in Chicago to:
admit female students and to enroll African-American students;
offer non-traditional (conditional) admission;
and among the first to offer evening courses for practicing attorneys.

These principles have served us well, and they allow us to continually drive legal education into the future.

For more than 100 years, The John Marshall Law School has striven to instill in its graduates the sense that an attorney "must earn the public's trust by acquiring the learning, skills and the values essential to fulfilling their responsibilities to the justice system and to those whom the profession serves." This standard has led John Marshall alumni (11,000 strong) to amass an enviable record of public and civic service. Service to the community has been a part of the John Marshall tradition since the law school's inception, and continues to inspire our students to professional excellence.

Today, The John Marshall Law School is forging a future of unparalleled achievement: an internationally recognized information technology law program,
nationally recognized intellectual property law and real estate law programs, an internationally recognized law journal, international conferences in intellectual property law and information technology law, nationally recognized moot court and mock trial teams, and one of the most comprehensive legal writing programs in the nation.

With more distinguished scholars joining the faculty and student body each year, John Marshall is on the threshold of a second century of achievement.

For the next 100 years, The John Marshall Law School is committed to setting the standard in legal education. We will continue to experiment, innovate and adapt to the changing demands of legal education, while holding true to those principles that have guided us to success during the past century. We will continue to educate and train effective advocates and counselors, instilling in them an appreciation for what it means to be "Chicago's law school."

The John Marshall Law School provides its students the opportunity to gain an understanding of the basic competencies expected of attorneys. In addition to the many courses that help meet this commitment, the law school has established a clinical legal education program, an academic program for which credit may be received. The program has two divisions; the fair housing clinic and the general externship program. Registration in a clinic placement is ordinarily limited to students who have earned at least 54 credit hours. A maximum of 10 clinic hours may be credited toward a student's degree requirement. Permission of the director is required for registration. Students must consult the director for specific requirements and rules applicable to the program.
