Law career

This profession is based on expertise in the law and in its applications. Working as a lawyer represents the practical application of legal theory and knowledge to solve real problems or to advance the interests of those who retain (i.e., hire) lawyers for legal services.

The law and legal system are the cornerstones of democracy. Helping people and organisations solve their problems can be personally satisfying. To become a lawyer is to take part in shaping the life of a nation and its people. Lawyers bargain with major court cases and minor traffic quarrels, complicated corporate coalitions, and straightforward real estate operations. The Lawyers work independently, either with partners or alone in private practice. Increasingly, they work for industry, small businesses, government agencies, international organizations, private commerce associations, public interest groups, legal aid offices, and universities.

Law practice is so varied that no one can describe what the "typical" lawyer does. Each lawyer works with distinct clients and distinct legal cases. All lawyers require certain basic legal skills. They must know how to:

  • analyze legal issues in light of the existing state of the law, the direction in which the law is headed, and the important policy considerations;
  • synthesize information;
  • advocate the views of groups and individuals within the context of the legal system;
  • give intelligent counsel on the law's requirements;
  • write and speak clearly; and
  • Transact effectively.

Lawyers act as both intercessors and advisors in our society. As advocates, they represent one of the parties in criminal and civil trials by presenting evidence and arguing in court to support their client. As advisors, lawyers counsel their clients concerning their legal rights and obligations and suggest particular courses of action in business and personal matters.

Legal education in the United States generally proceeds along the following route:

  • Undergraduate education (usually 4 years)
  • Law school (usually 3 years)
  • Admission to the bar (usually by taking a state's bar exam)
  • Legal practice
